Hello everyone,
Thanks for landing here on our blog.
Today I’d like to talk about software conversion tools.
As most Allen-Bradley / Rockwell system integrators are aware, the platform offers a quick conversion tool from old SLC / PLC-5 / Micrologix to the most up-to-date platform, AKA Studio 5000, utilizing compact or control logic hardware.
What if I tell you that now there is something similar to migrate from AB to Codesys?
For those who are not familiar with Codesys, it is an open-source, OEM/hardware agnostic, OOP-oriented IDE that can be downloaded for FREE and deployed right away from your laptop. It has an embedded simulator, and you can also develop web-based graphics that reside in the same file as the PLC codes!
Main advantages:
- Free software (the Codesys runtime license comes with your hardware – included in the price, no extra costs)
- The graphic interface resides on the same file/application (there is no more need to open multiple programs)
- Hardware and software costs drop dramatically
- Virtualization – the ability to deploy your codes on the cloud or edge devices
Now, going back to the conversion tool, our friends at Northern Dynamics in Ontario, Canada (a Codesys system partner) developed this nice tool. In minutes, we can convert Rockwell files to Codesys, select our platform, and start deploying right away!
The software is called “LEGAAT” and…
Now, there are no excuses anymore to give it a try:
- No More time-consuming manually converting applications
- Learning curve reduced (and we are always here to support you if you need a bump start! – DO NOT HESITATE!)
And, Bright IA is now an official reseller and integrator for it in the US southern regions.
How this works:
For system integrators: you have two options – 20 or 50 tokens licenses (we suggest the 50 tokens), once you deplete them, you can recharge and purchase more tokens.
For end-users: sit in there and enjoy the free licensing benefits of Codesys.
Once we start converting your AB applications, we’ll provide you with all the software copies and install Codesys on your maintenance laptop, so you are able, at any time, to log into your machines and troubleshoot them as needed.
How does this sound so far?
Not bad I think, especially compared to the alternative.
However, If you are not convinced yet, check this link below to where Paul @Northern Dynamics demonstrated a couple of conversions and how easy it is to do so:

Do you want to see it in action in real time?
Come and see us at the Automation Stars ⭐️ of Texas ASOT24 in Dallas – on October 29th and 30th, we’ll have demos for you!
You don’t want to wait? No problem! Go to our website and book a call now:

P.S. If you are looking to convert PLC-5 and motion controls instructions, we don’t have it yet, but wait for the next release where at least one if not both will be included.
Disclaimer: the conversion tool will not completely convert and compile your application. Pay attention and review objects like timers, AOIs, and other particular function blocks. In other words, the final functionality of the conversion is at the discretion of the system integrator and/or user of Legaat.
Have a great day and keep automating!
The future looks bright!
